Get Closer!

One of the tips that is most often repeated in photography is "get closer to the subject." I think that is is said so often because it's such great advice. There will be times when you want to step back or zoom out to capture an entire scene, but when I am trying to capture emotion and real expressions, I always try to get as close to the subject as possible.

In this example, I was fairly close to the subject. The frame was filled with this teenaged girl, and the focus of the image is definitely on the subject.
For the next shot, I took a step closer. I reduced the background distractions, and created an even more defined focal point for the image - her face (particularly her eyes).

So, next time you are out taking pictures, try to move in a little closer. Experiment with filling the entire frame with the subject.
