Thursday's (Photography Business) Contest!

For me, one of the most challenging parts of owning a photography business is the "business" part of it. I love photography, but I haven't always loved managing the business money, advertising, or worrying about new clientele or policies.

Thursday's contest is about the business of photography. What do you like, and what don't you like? What has helped you, and what things have created added stress? You don't have to answer all of those questions - just choose one to tell me a little about how you manage your photography business.

To enter the contest, you must be a follower of this blog, and leave a comment on this post telling me what you think about the business part of photography. Comments must be posted today before 11:00 p.m. MST. One winner will be randomly chosen to receive one set of Simple Marketing Templates plus one set of Photographer Forms. Your comment doesn't have to be related to this blog, and it doesn't have to be different that everyone else's! Just tell me about your photography business. The winner will be posted tomorrow morning here on the blog. Winners must contact me via email phototips@alexismiller.com within 48 hours.

I don't have a business legally yet but I am on my way. I have had a few clients and I am working on my portfolio right now!

Even though I am a Business major, I still prefer to take/edit pictures any day. :)

Scares the crap outta me! I want to start PBing but getting the business license is very confusing and intimidating.

One of the things Im really struggling with right now is the promoting of my business. How do you get the word out? where do you go. Its alot of research amongst other things. Im not a big outgoing person.. so im really struggling promoting myself and my business

I am so glad that I received my degree in marketing or I would be completely clueless about where to start. I find that I have many great advertising ideas, but get held back by the paperwork, and all of the legal aspects.

I have my husband handle a lot of the business side. I realize I don't love doing that stuff and it seems to bog me down and he totally loves doing that kind of stuff so I as for his help.

For me, the worst part of running a business is the accounting. I can handle marketing, sales, and appointments, but I'm ALWAYS behind with my books.

The part I can't stand is when people are late for their appt. I don't know whether to charge a late fee or what, but it costs me money in babysitting and backed up unhappy clients who are next in line.

I love the marketing - it is so much fun, but I don't like the legal details - they suck the fun out of it! :)

i'm just trying to start out and find my footing, so i'm still learning about the business side of things. i used to work as a graphic designer, so i've enjoyed designing business cards and flyers. but aside from those things, i'm pretty clueless! i hope to learn as i go.

Due to a serious reduction in my full-time job, I now have the time to pursue my dream of being a full-time photographer. I am an accountant so the money part of the business doesn't scare me, but not making the money to count sure does. LOL

I help my hubby run a buisness but it is not my photography one. I am far from being a professional; although I would love to become one someday. With enough practice and really tough skin (to handle cc) I may be able to see that dream through.

Make it a great day ladies and good luck to everyone!

I haven't started a business yet, I just photograph for friends and family, but I think the hardest part for me when I decide that I'm ready would be effective marketing.

I don't mind most of the business stuff. But, the part that I don't like is marketing and networking. I get nervous talking to new people, telling them what I do and all that. Getting my name out there is tough for me.

Business? what business! Right now, we're just PBing lol

I am just starting up my photog business - pbing currently, and these forms would be such a big help.
I have looked around for some help with how to write out the model releases etc, but I can never find anything that I really like or get it right myself.

You are very generous to be giving away such great things (I already have your Photography tip and tricks cards and they are a big help to me!).

I too am just getting started. I think the hardest part of getting started is know what to charge and how to promote myself.

I'm slowly building my portfolio and working on my business plans... not really liking the business side of it :)

I am just getting started, so there is sooo much to sort through and create and make sure I have t's crossed and i's dotted. I love shooting and editing and giving clients thier images. I am not a fan of the practical stuff!

What has helped me is my tax preparer. He has told me the ins and outs of owning a business. Trying to prepre me for what I am instore for. Sounds like it might not be as fun as I thought that it would be tee hee hee!
I have yet started the actual "business" side of it since the studio won't be finished until this spring .. it will be in the basement of our new home. I have a SIL who is a marketing major and she is the head accountant of a local bank. I hope that she has the time to show me the ropes LOL!
I have a few return clients that have halped me get my name out there. I just hope that I will finally learn how to advertise properly.

I don't have a business yet, and it's totally because of nerves that I don't. It scares me to death to have all the paperwork and keeping track of everything. Hopefully someday I can get over that fear.

IF I had a photography business, I think I'd enjoy the creative aspect of it...and, hopefully, the happy customers/clients. The part that's hard for me is how to begin...how do you build a portfolio? I think I could handle most other aspects, because my goal wouldn't be to become some big-time photographer...just something on the side. Something extra for money and to improve and utilize my photo/creative skills.

Michelle said...

The most challenging part so far is just getting everything set up! I want to be sure I do everything correctly but don't know what questions to ask sometimes...

Lisa said...

i get a big rush when I'm doing a photo shoot...my creative juices just run wild. that's one of my favorite things. i still need to familiarize myself more with photo editing and finding a good print shop, so that's frustrating.

Ambiance Photography said...

I, like many others out there, am just getting started. No legal business yet, only PBing. I'm not the best when it comes to marketing and getting my name out there, so that is one thing that intimidates me a little.

acrummylife said...

I am not legally official yet but I have added quite a client base this year. But for me it is a time balance. Anything that helps to ease stresses is quite beneficial at this time. But I definately need to work on some release forms.

Alison said...

I'm on my way to building my business... and the thing I am most looking forward to is meeting new people! The dynamics of different families and the things that make a special shot for them is so different from family to family- I love that! It is intriguing!

I'm not professional but if and when that time comes, thankfully my DH will be the one to do most of the business work. He's a business man and loves all that stuff. Love him for that!

Jenn W. said...

I actually enjoy marketing. After running another small business for 5 years I love to think of ways to get my name out there for free or little cost. What makes me nervous is will the customer like my style because this business is all about what you as the photographer "sees".

Mom2Drew said...

I think your forms are terrific and that's the hardest thing for me to organize. I love the business, but hate the organization, so these would be such an invaluable resource!

As for the business side I adore proofing I love the reactions to the proofs and calling my hubby on the way home saying... guess what they ordered?!

kim2002 said...

Even though I've been in this business a while, I've never had formal business training or forms to use. I have always just trusted my clients and, thankfully, have never been let down yet. Would love to have something more than a handshake to give them, though. Thanks!

mamafloss said...

I actually like the promoting part of the business... I use this term loosely!lol It seems to be part and parcel of the creativity of photography.
The part I hate is figuring out pricing and getting all the proper documents in order...ie: contracts/model releases. That sucks!

Danielle said...

I'm not in business because I am scared to deal with the business side but am in the process of building my portfolio while I figure out what I will need to do to start a business. So this prize will seriously help me out. I have been thinking about them for a while.

I hate the business part of my business. You wouldn't think I would having an accounting/math background, but I do. I also hate trying to promote myself, hence the lack of promotional things I do. LOL

SPHOTOGRAPHY said...

I don't enjoy trying to 'promote' myself. It feels odd to me - but you must do it!

petemiller said...

I'm an Accountant by day and photographer on the weekends, so the last thing I want to do is the business part. I would rather be taking/editing to creat that perfect photograph. Thanks.

Lynn said...

The hardest part for me the "selling" side of the business. I'm not so good about promoting myself....don't want to be too pushy and afraid of rejection.

waipuilani said...

The hardest part for me would be the marketing and organizing all the information. Where do I start? I want to be well organized from the beginning to make it as successful as possible. :)

Jennifer said...

I struggle with the marketing and gaining new clients aspect of things. I do things that I think are in the right direction, only to have disappointment.

The most help was the small biz center in town. Lots of practical advice for the math-type stuff that I as a visual person am not so great at. :)

I am having a very hard time keeping up with my books, so I would have to say that is the very least thing I like about having my own business...but I LOVE to take photos and create art out of them. :)

Kristen said...

Self-promotion and marketing are my biggest struggles. I am so not a salesman, and it's even harder when the thing you're trying to sell is yourself and your work!

Jill said...

I'm definitely not a pro but the part that drives me nuts is the money managing. Promoting yourself can be really hard too!

HI Alexis!
Well if it was just taking pictures I would think this is the perfect job! It is all the other "STUFF" that I do not like!
Well I do not have a license it is just a hobby right now. But I do love photography!
One thing that is hard for me is to have friends show up on time!
