Tuesday's (Inspiration) Contest!

In photography (and all forms of art), inspiration is everywhere. I love to look through magazines, books, and advertisement for inspiration, but my favorite place to be inspired is the internet! I absolutely love message boards & forums, galleries, and blogs.

For today's contest, I want to know where you find your inspiration.

To enter the contest, you must be a follower of this blog, and leave a comment on this post telling me where your inspiration comes from. Comments must be posted today before 10:00 p.m. MST. Two winners will be randomly chosen to receive one set of Posing Guides (one Masculine and one Feminine).

Your comment doesn't have to be related to this blog, and it doesn't have to be different that everyone else's! Just tell me where you go to find inspiration for your work. Winners will be posted tomorrow morning here on the blog. Winners must contact me via email phototips@alexismiller.com within 48 hours.

I have realized to look at light and the way it falls in a totally differnt way now. So my inspiration comes from looking at light in every day settings an imagining what I could do with it. I think, how would I position someone in this light and it challenges me constantly!
I never thought about it until I answered this question! :)

My inspiration comes from the internet too. I have a list of over 150 photoblogs that I follow, and add new ones every day. Two of my favorite places to find new blogs are http://www.photoblogs.org (start with the Hall of Fame) and http://photos.vfxy.com/

Oh gosh. Inspiration? Inspiration is all around. Sometimes its something big, sometimes something small. I get alot of inspiration from my daughter. The little things she does, her clothing choices, her eyes, her spirit. Sometimes I'll be driving down the road and see an awesome old wall and think, "Man...that would be a great place to take pictures". And next thing you know, all these ideas are running through my head. As long as you always have an open mind and take in whats all around you, inspiration can be found in anything.

Other photographers. What I like is that 10 people can take the same shot and have 10 different results. Also product packaging can have some good inspiration as well. Books, catalogs, magazines, anywhere you look you can find inspiration!

My inspiration switch is never turned off. Seriously. I'm probably even a slightly hazardous driver because I'm always looking at buildings and things off the side of the road. :)

I have to say that I grab inspiration all over the place - it surrounds me daily. In magazines, even calendars - I also go to flickr to look for fun poses - but really I look at the world and take from that.

Also my kids, they are my inspiration for getting up in the AM LOL

My inspiration comes from the person that I am shooting. I try to get a vibe on their style and what they would like. I try to set up an appointment before the shoot .. that way I can search the internet to get ideas on what may work for them.

O my gosh... photography has inspired me to open my eyes to the world around me. I find inspiration in sooo many things... alot of my inspiration comes from my children and the beauty of the world around me from day to day.

My inspiration comes from the heart my 4 year old daughter Eliana. I've doing allot of family tree research lately. And realized that I want to learn more abut my family, take more photos of my family to pass them along to future generations. Looking at the world through a lens I've learned so much more then just looking at the world.

Stefanie said...

I have a list of blogs saved. A few days before a session I will go through and look at different things to get inspired. I am constanly checking what's around me when I am driving to see if there is a new spot for a shoot! :)

I follow lots of photographers blogs with my google reader and rss feeds. I love it! I get so many good ideas and they are just waiting for me each morning when I turn on my computer.

My inspiration comes from watching my kids. They are so busy and active and I want to remember all the fun and silly things they do. I also LOVE to browse the internet. There is LOTS of info and inspiration out there.

My inspiratio comes first from two peas and then branchs from their. I have found some of the coolest blogs and websites to look at there and completely inspirest me

I use the internet. I love looking at photography blogs!

I think that we can find inspiration anywhere. Sometimes I try to find inspiration in the most unlikely places, I think that it stretches my imagination and creativity. I like to look at an unattractive setting and think of ways to incorporate it into something creative.

Kayce said...

I look everywhere for inspiration, but the main place I find it is right here on the internet. There are so, so many great resources on the 'net and so many great photographers that should their great work and ideas. It's really one of the best places to look!

Eileen said...

Amen to the internet! I love to look through photographer's galleries. And my eyes wander as I drive. Looking for brick, rock, stairs, greenery. But keeping in mind what time of day lighting would be good in that spot.

e.l.berge said...

There are so many wonderful photography blogs and sites. I love to gaze at the wonderful work of professional photographers.

Well-written books are also a great source of inspiration. Professional Secrets of Natural Light Photography and Understanding Exposure come to mind.

Gaspegirl said...

My inspiration usually comes from my children first. I love to watch the way they play or naturally "pose" in everyday situations and I use it in my photography. When I am about to photograph something relatively foreign to me I use Flickr... lots of beautiful galleries to be inspired.

Heather said...

My inspiration also stems from reality. My children are not always sporting the "I'm so gleeful" look my mom loves. But their moods and the subtleties I see on their faces inspire me to always keep my camera on the ready.

Michaelle said...

I'm insprired by my family and friends. Their reactions to my rapidly progressing work and their recommendations to the people they know, reminds me that my dream IS attainable. I always have that in mind at a shoot. I'm a regular girl, providing artwork for my every-day type of clients, who would otherwise have thought it was unattainable before.

Amy Eileen said...

You have a great blog here! :) I am now a follower and can tag along with everyone.
I find inspiration everywhere! Mostly though, I am inspired by other people's art. It could be photographers (on Flickr mostly or a few of the more known photographers in my area) or my son's drawing of the day. It could be the colors of nature that inspire me, or sometimes I even inspire myself with older photos I have taken and want to refresh that.

Sarah said...

I don't know that there is just one place that I find inspiration. My kids inspire me, my surroundings inspire me, my firneds inspire me and yes, many, many resources on the internet inspire me.

Lisa said...

my kids are my inspiration. i want to capture their true personalities on camera. also, i have never been happy with my wedding photos, so i strive to perfect my photography in such a way that my clients will remember the details of their special day.

Heather said...

My inspiration comes from life. Realizing that every moment is gone if not captured in a photo to remember forever. Yes we can remember in our minds, but it's not that exact moment. Life is so precious, it's so short, photos are really all we have to pass on those exact moments. Inspiration is in everything you see, you just have to look at things from all sides. I look at life completely different now and that inspires me as well.

nsanderson said...

While at school we had to keep an idea folder. So anything that you could find from magazines, pictures, tv, whatever. Since getting into photography more I notice that I am looking at my surroundings much differently.

The internet is a great place for inspiration. Bookmarking pages and tagging favorites is a way to motivate myself to produce images that exceed the ones I find.

I am also lucky enough to live in an area with a variety of landscapes from granite mountains, to grasslands, to the badlands.

I could (and have) spent countless hours just looking at other peoples pictures.

Jodi Vetsch said...

Photography has helped me become so much more aware of the amazing beauty I am surrounded by each and every day. I am inspired by textures and colors I encounter when doing "average" stuff. This is an odd example, but I was cleaning toilets and noticed the complexity and texture of the toilet brush and starting thinking about photography and photoshop... Now, that I sound weird, I guess to summarize, my inspiration comes from everything that I take the time to examine and appreciate.

Ursula Page said...

I get my inspiration from other photographers the most I think. I love taking what they do and making it my own.

Dawn said...

I get my inspiration from blog stalking and magazine advertisements! I also often find that if I will take the time to find the beauty in the environment I am shooting and the light in that environment I will get beautiful pictures everytime!!!

Mom2Drew said...

I find a lot of inspiration in clothing... patterns and colors and the like. I also love to think creatively and how I'd like to be photographed and try unique and fun angles that way.

Jodie said...

My inspiration mainly comes from the internet. I love photography forums and blogs. I am constantly watching and magazines for trends for seniors and babies too.

My inspiration comes from looking at the 2peas photo gallery, of course! :)

I may just be driving along and see a place that I think wow what could I do here! I look at the internet, magazines and my young family members. I like to take my niece out and try different sittings, a field, park, old house, barn what ever I might see that inspires me to want to shoot. I love to watch other photographers at work.

Natalie said...

My inspiration comes from other photographers and my surroundings. I'm constantly looking around for something new and fresh. I want to be constantly evolving. Take what I see and put a new spin to it.

I find inspiration in lots of places - especially the internet. I love twopeasinabucket.com's photography board, and I also follow the blogs of several of my favorite photographer, such as Audrey Woulard and Kelly Ryden. I also come up with lots of ideas wandering stores like Hobby Lobby, but my biggest inspirations are my two children.

I can spend hours upon hours on Flickr, so many talented photographers that keep me going.

My inspiration if from emotion itself. I literally feed off of little ones or older subjects emotion and run with it. Rather its a wedding that is joyous or a mad toddler thats what I like to see and get my inspiration from. Just the subjects as themselves then everything else follows right behind it.

Jennifer Urbin Photography said...

My inspiration are my two girls....just watching them play together, laugh together, and do silly things together inspires me to get out there and capture kids being kids. Don't get me wrong, I'm a blog stalked and yes I sometimes see pictures that I'd like to try and recreate with a little of my own twist, but for the most part...it's my kiddos. I would'nt be where I am today without them.

I Love, LOVE checking out other photographers blogs. I don't realize how much it inspires me until I am out shooting and images and ideas just pop in to my head.

I think it is so neat that I can create an image that is totally new and different but is still inspired by someone else even if it is not obvious.

Cyndie said...

Being a newbie to the photography world (just got my 1st d-slr yipee!!) I also get my inspiration from the internet. Checking out photography blogs and website gives me tons of ideas. My kids are a constant flurry of activity, and always an inspiration!

I am pretty new to this blog. I have never really thought of my inspiration. My aunt is the reason I have gotten into photography and I just love the beauty photographs can capture. So I guess those two things are my inspiration.

I look for inspiration everywhere.. and never look for it at all.. KWIM? sometimes it will be some beautiful flowers that inspires me to take my camera out, or possibly a great fabric that inspires a new quilt. if Im struggling.. i look to the forums and boards

Elise DeMille said...

Wow! That's hard to pick. For me I try to notice different outdoor locations as I am driving. One time I was looking for a great spot to take my kids pictures and stopped by the old red church on main street in Hyrum. (since torn down :( ) I got the most AWESOME shots by an old white painted door! Also the location was a little sentimental for me as well! I have several locations since that I have made note of and plan on trying out for my next "location".

I also find inspiration on the internet. Mostly in blogs.

Katie said...

My inspiration definitely comes from my son and from other photographers. I love looking at blogs and seeing what great things other people are doing. One of my favorites is Stacy over at Blue Candy Land. I tell my husband all the time "can we PLEASE take a trip to Indy sometime to have her take pictures of us?"

My inspiration comes from my surroundings - nature, old barns, farm life, and things I see on other blogs, etc. Inspiration is everywhere you just have to be open to it.

Heather Rose said...

My inspiration comes from everywhere. I swear I see everything through the camera, everything I look at I think of how it would look as a picture! The world and everything in it inspires me. I love google, I google for portrait poses and those inspire me. I have blogs bookmarked also that I frequent for new ideas and inspiration. I let my subjects do what they want in front of the camera and sometimes I get some great poses that I have never seen anywhere else, that inspires me for the next photoshoot.

Hey Alexis!
I'd say the bulk of my inspiration comes from, like many others, the internet. It's such an immeasurable resource. From photo message boards, to flickr, to blogs (like yours!!) to plain ole google searches, it's a wealth of information and resources.

kpshira said...

My inspiration, for the most part, comes from a few internet sites that I frequent. I like to see different poses and lighting effects. I don't us many props, but sometimes I'll see something great and want to try it.

Jamie Lynn Photography | Clarksville, TN Photographer said...

I get my inspiration from other photographer's work. I love browsing other websites as well as photos posted from fellow photographers on forums I post on.

Sometimes a location will inspire me and invoke a NEED to photograph something or someone in that exact spot.

mamafloss said...

My inspiration comes from the personalities of the kids/ppl I'm photographing. I find I have some ideas before getting to the shoot then find I throw them all out because something else has evolved from our interactions.
Another way I get inspiration is going to other ppl's blogs that I love and look to see the blogs they follow. Tried and true!

Christie said...

I always look through different magazines for inspiration. I get inspirations for props, poses, backgrounds, lighting angles, etc. Bridal magazines are the best!

CindyTykie said...

I'm new to this but right now my inspiration comes from looking at other people's photos, whether that be in magazines, books, or online

Melissa said...

My inspiration comes from blogs and other websites. It also comes from magazines and books. I have been a slump lately so I signed up for Master Piece a Month over at BetterPhoto to see if I can get my mojo back :-)

Thanks for the contest!

Kassi said...

I'm a blogstalker. If I a session coming up and I'm unsure of poses, I'm all over google and 2 peas trying to find some inspiration in other peoples work. Then I'm able to translate those ideas into something that works for my clients. I also like to find inspiration in the people I shoot, if they are happy go lucky, fun exciting people then I know they'll be more willing to get excited and do fun things. if they are more subdued I can still find ideas that will work with them and capture them in the best ways.

Heather B said...

Wow where do I get my inspiration? Honestly, I have to say that I do look on different forums to see what is now and up and coming. Then I try to put my own little spin on it. It seems lately the creativity is so hard to come by on my own and I really need the help. So to all of you out there that post regularly thanks for the inspiration! You keep me going!

waipuilani said...
